Sochi bronze medalist Jia Zongyang claimed China's fifth silver in the freestyle skiing men's aerials on Sunday. And following that medal winning performance, our Greg Laffradi caught up with the Chinese freestyle skier. And the 26-year-old discussed what was going through his mind during the competition. And what his goals are for the 2022 Games in Beijing.
JIA ZONGYANG OLYMPIC SILVER MEDALIST FREESTYLE SKIING AERIALS "On a personal note, I am satisfied with my own performance, but in terms of the overall team, it's a pity that our final runs were a little below par. During these two days, both the men's and the women's squads lost out by very small margins. So for Team China, there were regrets at these Olympics."
"I did not know because I couldn't see the athletes competing ahead of me. To me, it was a perfect jump, really good. After watching a replay of the final run, I saw that I still had some shortcomings. If I could have put together an even better effort, I might have gotten a higher score."
"No. I was not feeling nervous at all. Every attempt came after hundreds of training sessions. In terms of skills, and speed, both the coach and me are very confident. But maybe positioning problems led to a few slight mistakes."
"I listen to uplifting music and meditate. I also warm myself up physically."
"To participate the Olympics, and to represent China, I definitely went out with the best possible competitive edge. Our team has made huge efforts in preparation and training. So for my teammates, it was a pity, but for me, this is recognition of my efforts over the past four years."
"For the 2022 Olympics, I desperately hope to participate. But first, I will make some changes and talk with my coach about my form after these Games. I hope that in 2022, I can again stand on the Olympic stage."
"I want to first thank our coaches and the leaders of the team. They have given a lot to me. Without their efforts, I could not make it to this stage today, or recover from injuries. So I say thank you to the coaches, for the great efforts you've made."
