The SCO's significance in the area of security is growing, and the group's main players – China and Russia – are aiming for bilateral trade worth 100 billion US dollars this year. Until recently, trade between the two countries was in raw materials, but now both want more diversity. Tus-Holdings, a Chinese company, and Russia's Skolkovo Foundation have reached a deal over the establishment of a China-Russia center for advanced technologies. CGTN's Aljosa Milenkovic visited the Skolkovo technology park and sends this report.
Here lays the computer virus Petya, defeated by humans, June 27, 2017, says inscription on this board. This is a monument at the entrance of one of the Skolkovo techno-park buildings. It is a show of technological achievements that are made behind thousands of doors in this huge area close to Moscow. Over 1,800 startups are based here, and by the year 2021, the park will be fully financially self-sufficient. Russian government subsidies are only a third of what they were when the park was in its infancy. "Motorica" is one of those startups. They are producing advanced prosthetics for those in need.
IGOR, CRAFTSMAN MOTORICA "If you want to be proud of what you're doing this is the best place for it. Here are the projects that you can't find in the other areas of life. This is not for everybody, but if one has a lot of ideas, goals, and wishes, then this is an ideal place for them."
The number of startups here is expected to rise to some 25-hundred soon. These firms will help propel Russia's economy from one that leans on raw materials to an exporter of advanced tech.
ALJOSA MILENKOVIC SKOLKOVO "Russia needs the hi-tech breakthrough if wants to stay among the world's leading nations, was the message of Russian President Vladimir Putin after he was re-elected at that position just months ago. It is Skolkovo that'll have one of the most important roles in achieving that goal. And collaboration with Chinese in that area as seen as pivotal."
And Skolkovo bosses do not hide that they are welcoming China's presence here.
KIRIL KAEM, SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT SKOLKOVO FOUNDATION "In the first place, we are interested in Chinese investors and Chinese industry and would look into technologies developed by our startups. And the basic criterion, upon choosing our startups, is how innovative they are, not just for Russia, but for the entire world. It means that we are choosing the best scientific breakthroughs that are patented for the entire world."
Mr. Kaem says the opening of a Chinese hub in Skolkovo is possible, as well as Chinese technoparks in other parts of Russia. Russia knows Chinese firms have heard the message. They are interested in taking advantage of the significant human potential Russia has to offer to create products with universal demand.
MAXIM KUZNETSOV, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR RUSSIAN-ASIAN UNION OF INDUSTRIALISTS AND ENTREPRENEURS "These are mostly the projects in the medical area. Those are about telemedicine, pregnancy diagnostics, and treatment procedures for cancer patients. We are also considering projects in the 3D printing of bicycles and electric cars. The Chinese market is very interested in those."
China and Russia are looking at more areas for economic cooperation. Skolkovo offers a good way forward. Aljosa Milenkovic, CGTN, Skolkovo.
