Indonesia's first fully automated store uses facial recognition to make shopping as simple as possible. China's e-commerce giant, JD, opened the store last month -- its first unmanned shop abroad. Although it's received rave reviews, experts have concerns about privacy and data collection. CGTN's Silkina Ahluwalia has more from Jakarta.
This is Indonesia's only unmanned store, the first of its kind in Southeast Asia. Opened by Chinese online retailer JD, the store is the first and largest shop launched outside of China. It further shows the company's interest in expanding their businesses in Southeast Asia's largest economy.
EYVETTE TUNG PROJECT MANAGER, JD.ID X MART "There are so many regular type or brick and mortar stores in Jakarta and Indonesia alone but customers are always looking for something new so it benefits us to give that to consumers to experience and to try but also lets us learn what needs to be done in retail and so that's why our tagline is Advancing Indonesia because we want to further do that and not just as an e-commerce platform but also offline."
JD.ID X-mart allows customers to shop for products and check out themselves. The new technology known as "Radio Frequency Identification" tracks the tags that are attached to products and uses face recognition to match the goods with the buyer.
It's also equipped with cameras which collects real-time data and tracks customer movements.
SILKINA AHLUWALIA JAKARTA, INDONESIA "I'm going to give this new technology a try and see how quick it is to shop in a cashier-less store. So this store sells everything from fashion to beauty products to home living. Today I'm going to buy this travel pillow. Let's do it." "This says transaction in process. That's it. Just bought my travel pillow."
ENDA NASUTION TECH EXPERT "The challenges is that this is a new technology and we need to trust the technology in order to use it. We have some bad experience in the past where when we dealt with facial recognition technology they don't always give you the 100 percent result that they recognize you as you."
Southeast Asia has attracted thousands of Chinese tech investors in the past couple of years. Alibaba made a similar move when it bought Lazada Indonesia for 1 billion US Dollars. JD launched its online shopping site in Indonesia in 2016. Since then, it has served more than 20 million customers all over the country. The company plans on adding at least three warehouses this year to achieve their goal of delivering 85 percent of its orders on the same or next day. Silkina Ahluwalia, CGTN, Jakarta.
