Tattoos were once frowned upon in Iraq, but TV brought Western culture to the country, including images of inked celebrities. Body art found a foothold as part of a lively counterculture in the capital Baghdad. The presence of US soldiers sporting patriotically themed forearms also spurred the trend. Many want to put images from the country's recent past on their bodies. Skulls and religious symbols are among the most popular designs.
