Earlier today, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang met the press at the Golden Hall inside the Great Hall of the People. During the meeting, Premier Li took questions from journalists from both home and abroad.
Premier Li told reporters China is totally committed to its opening-up policy, and the country is looking at cutting tariffs on imported goods that would improve people's livelihoods and health.
LI KEQIANG CHINESE PREMIER "Opening up is a basic state policy. If there's one thing that's going to be different from the past, it will be that China will open even wider. With our economy so integrated with the world's, closing our door would only block China's own way. We aim to further bring down overall tariffs across the importing process, with rates for important day-to-day consumer goods slashed."
Premier Li also told the press China has no intention to pursue expansion.
LI KEQIANG CHINESE PREMIER "China has achieved its development in a peaceful international environment. I want to emphasize two points, one: China will not seek expansion. It is now a developing country and it has no intention to pursue expansion. What China wants is to develop relations with all other countries and regions on the basis of mutual respect and mutual benefits, and to work with others to build a community with a shared future."
Premier Li also addressed relations between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan, saying he was looking to pursue the peaceful development of cross-strait relations and would not tolerate any attempt to separate Taiwan from China.
LI KEQIANG CHINESE PREMIER "The development of cross-strait relations serves the well-being of the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. We will continue to pursue peaceful development of cross-strait relations. We have always worked to ensure that people from Taiwan enjoy the same treatment as people from China's mainland when they come to live, work and study on the mainland. That is because we are from the same family as we both belong to the one and same China. We must not tolerate any attempt or proposition for Taiwan separation. We will not tolerate any external forces which use Taiwan as a tool to create difficulty for cross-strait relations and for the people on both sides."
Questions concerning International affairs were taken, such as the progress made on the Korean Peninsula recently. Premier Li said all parties should take concrete actions towards denuclearization.
LI KEQIANG CHINESE PREMIER "We welcome the recent de-escalation of tensions on the Korean Peninsula. China supports all efforts that will help resolve the DPRK nuclear issues through dialogue and consultation. China will continue to play its role in this regard, and will also do its best for the denuclearization process, and for a peaceful and stable Korean Peninsula."
Premier Li Keqiang also pointed out that China doesn't want a trade war when it comes to doing business with the United States.
LI KEQIANG CHINESE PREMIER "Indeed we have heard much talks about a possible trade war between China and United States recently. We believe that a 'trade war' does either no good. No one will emerge a winner from a trade war."
The press conference is always seen as an important part of the Two Sessions. Apart from questions mentioned before, Premier Li also answered questions about medical reform, Internet development, and business.
