Nigeria has declared a national disaster following severe floods. The floods have left at least 100 people dead in several states across the country. Nigeria's emergency management agency says it is monitoring the situation in over eight states. CGTN's Kelechi Emekalam has the latest on that.
The extent of floods that have washed huge swaths of low lying territories across Nigeria. This is near Lokoja-the capital of Kogi states in central Nigeria. Dozens have been killed here and hundreds of homes submerged. Kogi state is among the four most affected states-the others are Anambra, Niger and Delta states. And these emergency management team is here to asses first hand the extent of the crisis.
MUSTAPHA MAIHAJA NIGERIA EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY "On behalf of the president and commander in chief of the armed forces of the federal republic of Nigeria Muhamadu Buhari, I engineer Mustapha Mahaija the director general National environment Management agency, hereby declare national emergency in the following states, Kogi state, Niger state Anambra state and Delta state. Other 8 states would be under watch as the situation continues."
This is the time of the year when Nigeria receives the heaviest rain falls. The heavy rains have force Benue river and Niger rivers to burst their banks. As such communities in low lying areas are the most affected.
MUSTAPHA MAIHAJA NIGERIA EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY "A proposal will be tabled to the president for a lasting solution whereby in line with provision of relevant national disaster response plan, the state government will sign an agreement with the federal government taking part of the responsibility of the funding, that negotiations will commence in earliest so that we come up with permanent and lasting solution to this problem."
KELECHI EMEKALAM ABUJA, NIGERIA "These are the early days of the floods and the meteorology department is predicting more heavy rains ahead meaning the situation could get worse in the coming days. The declaration of national disaster means, the federal government will now take over emergency response in the affected state in terms of search and rescue of victims, provision of emergency relief assistance and shelter. The government has already approved some $ 8.2 million emergency response fund but it is calling for more support from the international community. Kelechi Emekalam, CGTN, Abuja, Nigeria."
