A corner of London has been propelled back to medieval times. Knights in a re-enactment of the 14th and 15th centuries took part in a grand jousting match. Qi Jie has more.
Dressed in full armour, the knights fought each other in an English Heritage re-enactment that also included various family attractions.
DOMINIC SEWELL JOUSTING ADVISOR "Getting into all this gear is because of a love of history that I've had since I was a small boy. I grew up in a castle town in the north of England where played in the castle and around the castle and just fell in love with history."
In the Middle Ages, jousting was a martial game between two horsemen wielding lances with blunted tips, often as part of a tournament. The primary aim was to replicate a clash of heavy cavalry, with each participant trying hard to strike the opponent while riding towards him at high speed, if possible breaking the lance on the opponent's shield or jousting armour, or unhorsing him.
GEORGINA HALLETT ASSISTANT EVENT MANAGER "It's great fun, great fun for all the family with two jousts a day plus medieval encampments, there's archery tournaments and lots of things for the family to see and just learn about the medieval period from the 14th to the 15th centuries."
The joust used to be an iconic characteristic of knights in Romantic medievalism. QIJIE, CGTN.
