In Indonesia, Search and rescue teams continue to scour areas hit by a deadly tsunami that struck without warning on Saturday. At least 222 people were killed along Indonesia's Sunda Strait. More than 800 others were injured and dozens were reported missing. Officials say the death toll is likely to rise further. The disaster sent a wall of water crashing ashore, sweeping away people, houses and buildings, and leaving debris along populated shorelines. President Joko Widodo has conveyed his condolences to those affected and urged the search and rescue teams to quicken the process of finding those that are still missing. CGTN's Silkina Ahluwalia reports.
Bayi is searching through what was once his livelihood and main source of income. On Saturday night, a 20 feet tsunami wave swept through this area destroying his corner shop to rubble.
BAYI TSUNAMI VICTIM "The water started to come up to my ankles around 9 pm. Then the water receded for an hour. As it started to recede, we ran to higher ground for safety, but nothing happened. At 10 pm, suddenly a huge wave came crashing down here. It came out of nowhere."
Authorities believe the waves that crashed through the coastal town of Banten, Indonesia were caused by powerful movements below the waters after one of Indonesia's largest volcano, Anak Krakatoa, erupted on Saturday night.
SILKINA AHLUWALIA BANTEN, INDONESIA "The last time the volcano erupted was in 1883, that's 135 years ago. The destruction was massive. This marks the second time that an eruption caused an underwater landslide bringing deadly waves that washed over this town."
The search and rescue team continues to make their way through piles of rubble after hundreds of homes and buildings including hotels and resorts were damaged in the area, considered a popular holiday town by the locals. But many residents here say they did not foresee any warning signs before the tsunami struck.
SUTOPO PURWO NUGROHO SPOKESPERSON, NAT'L DISASTER MITIGATION AGENCY "Our recommendations are that people should not carry out activities at the beach and stay away from the coast for a while. The potential for a fresh tsunami is still possible because Krakatau continues to erupt, which could trigger a tsunami."
Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire which means volcanic eruptions are frequent in the country. Authorities have warned residents and tourists around the area to remain cautious and a high-tide warning until the 25th of December has also been announced.
