A university in northwest China has sent out the country's first admission notice using Augmented Reality technology.
The Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU) in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, sent the AR notice on Tuesday afternoon to a student surnamed Wei who lives in eastern Shandong Province.
In addition to the standard enrollment information written on the paper, encoded information scanned with an NPU reality enhancement app gives students access to a virtual campus.
The front side of the letter features explanations about the university’s past and present, as well as the course program, it offers, while QR codes on the back give students access to dynamic presentations of the university’s characteristics.
AR is a technology which allows users to interact with augmented, computer-generated elements with a view of the physical world.
When certain objects are scanned, augmented sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data are activated. Some mobile and video games have applied this technology in an attempt to enhance the immersive experience.
“AR has been widely applied in daily education on our campus,” Xie Dan, vice director of the NPU’s admission office said, “We tried to embed this technology in admission letters to present to our future students the cutting-edge nature of our institute.”
AR and VR (virtual reality) are two of the hottest technologies in the world right now.
According to research released by a third party consultant corporation under the Caixin Insight Group (CIG), in 2010 AR patent applications have increased steadily over the years.
As of today over 7,000 AR patent applications have been filed around the world and experts predict that consumer grade AR products are just around the corner.
