Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May laid out a pathway for the EU citizens to maintain residency in the UK in a policy paper presented to the parliament on Monday.
The European Union has termed May's offer "below expectations" and demanded Britain go further to safeguard the rights of three million EU citizens after Brexit.
The British premier minister has insisted the offer she made at the European Council meeting last week remained fairly sensible.
No EU citizen would be forced to leave the UK after Brexit in March 2019, she said, adding she wanted to end the anxiety of EU nationals who have made their home in Britain.
“Our offer will give those three million EU citizens in the UK certainty about the future of their lives, and a reciprocal agreement will provide the same certainty for the more than one million UK citizens who are living in the European Union,” May said.
