“My wallet was stolen in the service area," said the woman, appearing distraught at the side of a BMW car before she proceeded to ask for money to buy petrol.
But it was all part of an elaborate hoax that was cut short by an alert police officer.
It was the last day of the Qingming Festival holiday on April 7. Traffic policeman Xiao Jianhua of Huizhou City in Guangdong was going out on patrol in his private car. As he was heading away from a highway toll station, a woman stood beside a white BMW and beckoned him to stop. He immediately thought that it might be a trick which others had complained about recently.
He stopped and the woman ran towards his car. "Hi, my car is running out of gas," said the woman from Anhui Province in eastern China. "My wallet was stolen in the service area. Can you lend me 200 RMB for refueling? You see, I drive the BMW car."
Xiao said he deliberately raised his arm to let the woman see the "police" sign on his shirt.
At that point, she turned away. Seeing this, Xiao got out of the car ran after the women, arrested her and took her to the police station for questioning.

The woman acknowledged her wrongdoing and wrote a confession letter saying she will never to do such illegal thing again. According to her, she was addicted to gambling and left home last week after quarreling with her husband.
She said she had got the idea from the Internet where she learned that some Anhui villagers in Guangdong had made a lot of money by begging dishonestly.
