A two-day seminar on global governance kicked off Tuesday at Peking University, with scholars and think tanks gathered to discuss ways to tackle global issues and protect international and multilateral cooperation.
Speaking at the seminar titled "Enhancing global governance from mutual benefit and win-win cooperation," Wu Hongbo, former under-secretary-general of the United Nations said many ideas should be valued like the shared future for mankind.
He said this is to find common ground among countries, and in particular, safeguard the interests of developing nations, and promote south-to-south cooperation.
Many agreed that cooperation and globalization is a positive trend, and that settling disputes through dialogue – rather than on the battlefield or in the marketplace – is the way forward.
"It's not about competition anymore. It's about how we can cooperate together, search for the opportunities for the next generations,” Ahmed Farid Morsy, deputy chief of the embassy of Egypt in Beijing said.
Marielza Oliveira, director of UNESCO Beijing office, said that better relations among countries could yield positive effects, expressing her desire that no one would be left behind.
The speakers pointed to young academics as the future of global growth.
Jia Qingguo, dean of School of International Studies at Beijing University, said China and other countries should learn more about the outside world.
As a scholar in one of the top universities in China, he said the future world needs to have more young talents with global perspectives, understanding, and diligence to participate in the process.
