China's Saihanba afforestation community on Tuesday won the annual UN Champions of the Earth Award in Nairobi, Kenya. Saihanba, which covers about 93,000 hectares in Hebei Province, almost became a wasteland in the 1950s. Hundreds of foresters embarked on planting trees in Saihanba in 1962. Three generations of foresters worked to increase the forest cover from 11.4 percent to 80 percent. Every year, over 500,000 tourists visit Saihanba.
