At least 20 people were killed after an overcrowded boat capsized in river Yamuna in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on Thursday, the AFP news agency reported, citing an official.
"It appears the boat was crowded beyond its capacity", Dharam Pal Singh, the additional magistrate in Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh state told the news outlet, adding that the incident happened early morning.
The boat was carrying around 60 passengers, according to a police official, and 12 of them have been rescued and sent to hospital.
"We have pressed in our men at several spots along the stretch of the river to search for the missing", the police official said. "It is feared the death toll in the tragedy might go up."
The rescue operation is underway.
