The Czech Republic’s gold medal-winning performance in men’s hockey at the 1998 Nagano Olympics is viewed as one of the greatest underdog stories at the Olympics.
Twenty years after the triumph, Hollywood producer Frank Marshall and the Olympic Channel’s Five Rings Films provide fans with the opportunity to relive that moment, in an exclusive video from the Olympic library
Andrej Hudecek, a Sundance Film Festival winning Director, produced the video, which inspired him as a youngster in the Czech Republic.
Before the tournament, many thought the Czechs would not be able to secure a medal, let alone winning the gold.
But a goalie, Dominik Hasek guided the team to victories against the United States, Canada, and Russia, the three favorites to claim the title.
In the knockout stage, Hasek was almost unbeatable, allowing just one goal as the Czechs topped the US 4 -1.
In the semi-finals against Canada, the game would be decided by a shoot-out, after the teams played to a 1-1 tie.
Hasek was magnificent, stopping all five Canadian shooters, as the underdogs advanced to the gold medal game.
The title contest would be against Russia, and Hasek would again make a difference, not allowing a single puck to beat him, as he recorded a shutout, in the Czechs 1-0 victory, sealing Olympic gold.
