S. Korean President Moon Jae-in met Sunday with a high-ranking delegation from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) that was due to attend the closing ceremony of the 23rd Winter Olympics.
The meeting lasted for about an hour in PyeongChang, the eastern county where the closing ceremony was taking place later, according to local media reports citing the presidential Blue House.
The DPRK delegation, led by Kim Yong Chol, vice chairman of the Central Committee of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea, came via land route in the west region earlier in the day. The delegation will stay for three days.
A DPRK delegation was also in PyeongChang for the opening ceremony on February 9 and later met with Moon, delivering an invitation for him to visit Pyongyang at the earliest possible date.
The delegation included a group of high-level DPRK leaders, including Kim Yo Jong, the sister of its top leader Kim Jong Un and Kim Yong Nam, president of the Presidium of the DPRK Supreme People's Assembly.
In response, Moon said the two sides should create conditions to make his visit happen. He asked the DPRK side to more actively engage in dialogue with the United States.
