That's right. African leaders have welcomed China's renewed investment on the continent. In this edition of The Link, we focus on Egypt and what China's eight major initiatives mean for the country. CGTN's Yasser Hakim has the details.
China has pledged 60 billion dollars to Africa in the form of investments, trade and aid. Furthermore, Chinese President Xi Jinping has outlined eight initiatives to be implemented in the continent in the next three years. It includes food aid programmes, projects in green development and environmental protection as well as vocational training for thousands of young Africans. Experts say Egypt will benefit greatly from some of these initiatives.
ALAA MOATEMED, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, AL GOMHURIA DAILY "China has a lot of experience in infrastructure projects as we have seen in China itself and therefore Beijing can play a big role in the development process in Egypt. China is participating in important projects in Egypt such as the railway and transportation industry and power generation. China has constructed several power stations in the country and all this infrastructure would be vital in the development process."
China has already signed deals with Egypt during the FOCAC forum, worth $18 billion of investments. But the Chinese-Egyptian cooperation has gone further than economic projects. Egypt has been combating extremists in the last few years. And China has been working with Egypt on counterterrorism efforts.
ALAA MOATEMED, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, AL GOMHURIA DAILY "Economic Development is crucial in the fight against extremism and terrorism. Unemployment creates anger among the youth who are then recruited and brainwashed by extremists. That's why establishing projects with China would create jobs, while establishing schools will build a well-educated generation that cannot be influenced by extremist thinking and this will eradicate terrorism."
Local media has been extensively covering the FOCAC describing it as a major success and China as a true friend of Africa.
YASSER HAKIM, CAIRO, EGYPT "Experts and media have also been hailing the 'five-no' policy announced by President Xi Jinping. It basically translates into No interference in the internal affairs of any country. African countries including Egypt have always been complaining that the western nations have always interfered its affairs in return for economic aid. Yasser Hakim, CGTN Cairo."
