China-US Trade War: New tariffs will create obstacles for trade consultations
Updated 14:13, 18-Jul-2019
China says it hopes the US will show determination and perseverance in finding a solution to the trade war. The comment came after Washington said there is still a long way to go before reaching an agreement and after US President Donald Trump said he may impose tariffs on another 325 billion US dollars worth of Chinese goods if necessary. CGTN's Liu Yang reports.
It's a clear stance from China - if the US imposes new tariffs, this will be an obstacle to economic and trade negotiations and only extend the time it takes China and the US to reach a mutually beneficial trade agreement.
GENG SHUANG CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTRY SPOKESPERSON "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. No matter how long the road, as long as the pace moves firmly forward, the end is always reached. We hope the US side will show determination and perseverance, and work with China to reach a mutually beneficial economic and trade agreement on the basis of mutual respect and equal treatment."
In recent days, a number of US lawmakers have proposed legislation that would continue the strict restrictions on Chinese tech giant Huawei. The Chinese Foreign Ministry again responded.
GENG SHUANG CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTRY SPOKESPERSON "The United States has used its national power to make groundless accusations against Chinese companies. It has seriously damaged the national image of the US, seriously damaged the self-interests of American enterprises, and more seriously damaged the global industrial chain and supply chain."
During the G20 summit in Osaka this June, Trump said some US companies could resume trade with Huawei, but the actions of US lawmakers tell a different story.
GENG SHUANG CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTRY SPOKESPERSON "The international community is watching how and when the US fulfills its commitments, which concerns its own credibility and public trust."
The Chinese Foreign Ministry also said the US should stop cracking down and imposing sanctions on Huawei and other Chinese companies for no reason at all and take more steps that are conducive to the healthy and stable development of China-US trade cooperation, rather than putting obstacles in the way.
LIU YANG BEIJING "China's Commerce Ministry recently released a report on the WTO's investigation into Beijing's complaints about US countervailing trade measures. The latest WTO report found 11 US countervailing measures violated WTO rules and demanded the US to rectify the regularities."
In 2018, during an interview with Bloomberg, President Trump said he would pull the US out of the WTO if the organization doesn't 'shape up'. China has been calling on the US to take immediate action to correct the wrong practices and create a stable and fair trade environment around the world. LY, CGTN, Beijing.
