Former President of South Korea, Park Geun-hye, is suspected of using illicit funds provided by the country’s chief intelligence agency, Yonhap News Agency reported Wednesday citing prosecutors.
"The true nature of the case is that civil servants provided bribes from state coffers and the president took them and privately used them," said an official from the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office after an investigation into the National Intelligence Service (NIS).
The amount of money paid monthly by three NIS chiefs is thought to be around 100 million won (89,923 US dollars), a figure that accumulated to 4 billion won (3.6 million US dollars) between 2013 and mid-2016.
The three NIS chiefs under Park reportedly told prosecutors the payments were made at the request of the presidential office.
Prosecutors have sought court approval to issue arrest warrants for all three.
