China-US Military Ties Under Strain: US provocation will only drive PLA to strengthen its capabilities
[]
China is calling on the US to work in the same direction in building stable military-to-military relations, which is in their common interest. This includes upholding the One China policy and stopping arms sales to Taiwan. The Ministry of National Defense issued the warning at its regular monthly briefing in Beijing. CGTN's Han Bin has the details.
Tensions never seem to ease in these strategic waters. Last Friday, another US Navy destroyer sailed within 12 nautical miles of China-controlled islands and reefs in the South China Sea— the 2nd such venture this year. At the same time, Chinese Air and Naval Forces conducted combat exercises over the South China Sea and western Pacific Ocean. An array of advanced weaponry was used to test operational capabilities. The Chinese military says it strongly opposes US provocations conducted in the name of "freedom of navigation".
REN GUOQIANG, SPOKESMAN MINISTRY OF NATIONAL DEFENSE "China respects the rights of freedom of navigation under international laws. But some countries are flaunting military might in those areas. Their activities are threatening China's sovereignty, security, and interests. China will choose to respond and continue to develop its military capabilities, based on how much its interests are threatened and compromised."
The US military affirmed that future operations will continue. And the Chinese side said such moves won't go unchallenged. The stakes are high for both sides. In its latest defense strategy report, the US Defense Department declared China a security threat. Washington has infuriated Beijing by passing a law promoting ties with Taiwan, after the Trump administration approved an over one-billion-US-dollar arms deal for the island. China has condemned the US over the legislation, saying it violates the "One China" policy that Washington has committed to observing.
REN GUOQIANG, SPOKESMAN MINISTRY OF NATIONAL DEFENSE "We are firmly opposed to any official exchanges or contacts with Taiwan by any country, including the United States. Taiwan is an inalienable part of China. We have full confidence that the reunification of China, and the rejuvenation will not be stopped by any individual, any force, or any movement. We are fully capable of achieving that task."
Among the many warnings by Beijing, the message is clear: China wants to avoid confrontation, but any provocation will only spur the drive to strengthen its military capabilities.
HAN BIN BEIJING "The Ministry confirms that the US Defense Secretary is scheduled to come to China, though not specifying the date. James Mattis's visit is seen as important in setting the tone for military relations. Amidst the rising tensions, at least, senior-level communications have NOT been suspended. Han Bin, CGTN, Beijing."
