A new movie titled 'Made in China' has been released in France this week. The comedy talks about the coming of age of a French man of Chinese descent, and cultural misunderstandings. CGTN's Stefan de Vries spoke to the movie's author and main character, Frédéric Chau.
This is actor Frédéric Chau. He's well-known in France, but famously known in the 13th District of Paris, Europe's largest Chinatown. And now, he is one of the main characters in the new movie, 'Made in China'.
"There must be an error, we haven't ordered anything. Maybe it's the opposite door?"
"No, but, really? There is a mistake because actually."
"Oh hi, this is François."
"Damn!"
FRÉDÉRIC CHAU ACTOR "'Made in China' is a comedy that shines a spotlight on the Chinese community in France, going further than the usual condescending clichés. I play François, a man who got in a fight with his father a long time ago, and who cut ties with his family in the 13th district. And then his wife tells him that he will be a dad. She says: you go back to the 13th, settle your problems, so our child will know his grandfather. So I go back to him, but it is also my quest for my identity."
"How are you going to explain to your child his origins? His history, where he comes from?"
"Well, er, I'll tell him he is from Brittany."
"Honey, it's time, time to call your dad."
Frédéric Chau based the movie on his childhood memories.
FRÉDÉRIC CHAU ACTOR "When I was a kid, we came here all the time. My parents did their shopping at Tang Frères, then we went to the temple to pray, and then, of course, we went to have a meal in one of the Asian restaurants here. And I'm still coming here, now with my daughter. We still go to the temple. I'm passing on my community's traditions and customs."
The 13th District plays an important role in the movie. This neighborhood became Europe's largest Asian district by accident.
FRÉDÉRIC CHAU ACTOR "All these towers here were built around 1975 for French civil servants. But they didn't want to live here, so they lowered the prices. And when the Asians arrived, first the refugees from Indo-China in 1979, it was cheaper, so they all came here."
Chau's last comedy attracted almost 10 million people to cinemas. He's sure this one will be a big hit as well.
FRÉDÉRIC CHAU ACTOR "We had the preview of the movie, here in the 13th, and everyone was happy, so I'm really proud."
The movie is also expected to be in cinemas later this year in China. This is Stefan de Vries, in Paris for CGTN.
