The Communist Party of China proposed amendments to China’s current Constitution in late January. The amendments were submitted on March 5 to the first session of the 13th National People’s Congress for deliberation. The deputies are scheduled to vote on the amendments on March 11.
If the amendments are adopted, this will be the first revision to China’s Constitution in 14 years.
At an NPC panel discussion on Wednesday, President Xi Jinping said he wholly endorsed the draft constitutional amendments.
Premier Li Keqiang and other senior members of the Chinese leadership have also expressed their support to the proposed amendments.
The first Constitution of the People’s Republic of China was enacted in 1954.
