In Syria, an agreement has been reached to evacuate hundreds trapped in the last rebel-held town in the Eastern Ghouta region. It's reportedly part of a larger deal that gives the government full control of the region, after seven-years of revolt. CGTN's Alaa Ebrahim reports from Damascus.
ALAA EBRAHIM DAMASCUS "Some 200 rebel fighters left the town of Douma on Sunday in the first step of a deal that will ultimately end all rebel presence in Eastern Ghouta. Rebels have controlled this Damascus suburb since 2012 and managed to launch several attacks on the capital from it in addition to fending off repeated government offensives to re-take it. The Syrian army says it now controls all of Eastern Ghouta except the town of Douma. All day on Sunday state TV showed footage of Syrian soldiers being deployed and entering districts like Jobar and Zamalka that for so long have been rebel strongholds. In Damascus, meanwhile, we've seen the largest Easter masses and parades here in years. Repeated rebel mortar attacks in recent years made many reluctant to take part in large gatherings but this week the scene was completely different as government forces have managed to clear any rebel presence east of the capital - where attacks on predominately Christian districts would typically be launched. Despite all of this it is still unclear the precise terms of the deal to end rebel control of Douma, the largest town in Eastern Ghouta. A source in the Syrian army tells CGTN that the deal will evacuate rebel fighters to Jarablus town along the border with Turkey north of Syria. Others wanting to stay, we're told, would receive a government pardon after surrendering their weapons, releasing hostages and prisoners they have in at least two major prisons inside Douma, or at least revealing the fate of hundreds of civilians and soldiers captured over the past 6 years. But the deal that was mediated by Russia seems to have a transitional period in which some rebels will continue to be present as part of a policing force in the town. Alaa Ebrahim CGTN - Damascus."
