Chinese President Xi Jinping, also the general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, told members of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee that high-ranking officials should serve the people and practice self-discipline – one of the most important indicators to measure an official's loyalty and competence.
Xi made the comments at a meeting with the 25 members of the Party's core decision-making body held on Monday and Tuesday.
Higher position; more responsibility
Xi said CPC members should take more responsibility and better serve the people. To do that, party members, especially the ones holding high positions, should act as role models by strictly self-disciplining and always adhering to the law, Xi stressed.
Cadres of the Political Bureau should self-discipline better and follow the rule of law, should discipline family members and close aides, and should firmly oppose privilege, Xi told the members, who were recently elected at first plenary session of the 19th CPC National Congress held in October.
The Party's chief said the authority of the CPC Central Committee has been centralized and that Party members, especially high-ranking ones, should uphold the unified leadership.
He added that the priority for all members of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee is to implement the tasks and realize the goals set at the 19th CPC National Congress.
At the opening of the grand Party gathering, Xi pledged to build a "modern socialist country" for a "new era". He said China will be a "basically" modernized socialist country by 2035, and a modern socialist country that is strong, prosperous and beautiful by 2050.
Warning of challenges domestically and internationally, Xi noted that leading officials should have a stronger sense of urgency and be ready for "a great struggle with many new contemporary features."

Xi said senior Party members should be role models in leading the campaign against bureaucracy and extravagance.
In 2012, Xi elaborated on the "four forms of decadence" – formalism, bureaucracy, hedonism and extravagance – and urged all Party members and officials to take the eight-point regulation to streamline bureaucracy and to ban misuse of public money and privilege, as well as luxury lifestyles.
At Tuesday's meeting, Xi said the campaign will continue as the misbehavior and undesirable work styles are "intractable and recurrent."
He warned the "four forms of decadence" are "the enemies of the Party and the people" and urged the members of the Political Bureau to take lead in fighting bureaucracy and luxury lifestyle.
Xi also encouraged the Party members to make decisions based on investigation and research, which are the foundation for doing all work well.
"Every Party member should avoid empty talk; instead, they should make concrete efforts to carry out the policies and decisions of the CPC Central Committee and fulfill the tasks of reform and development that benefit the people," Xi said.
