The Silence Breakers have been named Person of the Year 2017 by TIME, the US weekly magazine announced on its website and NBC’s Today show on Wednesday.
The social movement aimed at raising awareness about sexual harassment and assault, epitomized by the #MeToo social media hashtag.
"This is the fastest moving social change we've seen in decades, and it began with individual acts of courage by hundreds of women and some men, who came forward to tell their own stories," Time editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal told NBC's Today program, referring to them as "The Silence Breakers."
TIME magazine has identified the Person of the Year since 1927, awarding the person or group of people who most influenced the news during the past year, either positively or negatively. Last year the title went to Donald Trump.
