China and Myanmar are seeking stronger bilateral ties and have agreed to tackle regional concerns more closely together. This comes as Myanmar's Minister for the State Counsellor's office visits Beijing.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi welcomed Kyaw Tint Swe on Tuesday. Kyaw Tint Swe thanked China for its support in promoting peace in Myanmar. Fighting between the military and armed opposition groups in Myanmar has sometimes spilled over the border into China. Kyaw Tint Swe said his country would continue efforts to safeguard peace and stability there. Wang Yi said China would continue to support Myanmar in protecting its national dignity and legitimate rights on the international stage. The visit comes two years after 700 thousand Rohingya Muslims fled the conflict in western Myanmar's Rakhine State and became refugees in Bangladesh.
WANG YI CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTER "As a common friend of both Myanmar and Bangladesh, China has been engaged in communication and good offices between the two countries. We hope people living in evacuation shelters can return to their homeland soon. We'll continue to deal with the issue through bilateral channels with both countries, and we praise Myanmar's flexible and positive stance on the matter."
