Welcome back to China 24. China's Ministry of Commerce held a news briefing after the second round of trade talks between China and the US, where the two sides reached some agreements. Our reporter, Wang Hui, brings us the details.
WANG HUI BEIJING "China and the US had their intense second round of trade talks in Washington DC on May 17th and 18th. The Chinese delegation was led by Vice Premier Liu He. The two countries released a joint statement afterwards. Some media reports say Washington and Beijing have different interpretations of the statement, that Washington believes it just temporarily calms the dispute, and does not put a full stop to it. The spokesman Gao Feng with the Chinese Ministry of Commerce gives his opinion on this."
GAO FENG, SPOKESMAN MINISTRY OF COMMERCE "The biggest achievement of this round of talks is that the two sides agree to resolve the current China-US trade dispute through dialogue and cooperation, and not going to start a trade war. It sends a positive, strong and powerful signal to the market, and stabilizes the market's expectation. We would like to strengthen cooperation in agricultural products, energy, medical, high-tech products and finance."
WANG HUI BEIJING "The joint statement agrees to significantly increase purchases of US goods and services, strengthen cooperation in intellectual property protections, and encourage two-way investment and create a fair, level playing field. As the US has been eager to expand its exports to China to balance its trade deficit, I raised a related question at the news briefing."
WANG HUI BEIJING "The joint statement says China will increase American exports in goods and services to China. It particularly mentioned America's agricultural products and energy. Some media reports say it will cover beans, beef and shale oil. Do you have a list of goods and services on this matter? Do you have a timeline to get this work done?"
GAO FENG, SPOKESMAN MINISTRY OF COMMERCE "We discussed specific goods and the areas with the potential of bilateral trade cooperation. I would like to stress that both sides believe trade should be a market behavior, and respect the rules of market economy. We welcome all countries’ high-quality and competitive goods and services to enter into Chinese market, and are willing to provide fair and transparent business environment."
WANG HUI BEIJING "Protection of intellectual property has been a long issue between the two countries. The America's 301 investigation into China's intellectual property practices also became the lightning rod of this trade dispute since March. Through this round of trade negotiations, China also agreed to facilitate the amendment of its Patent Law. The spokesman explains the details."
GAO FENG, SPOKESMAN MINISTRY OF COMMERCE "The relevant governmental organs are actively facilitating the amendments of the laws related in intellectual property, including the Patent Law. The Patent Law is taking advice from the public, and listed in the plan of this year's legislation work of the State Council and the National People's Congress Standing Committee."
WANG HUI BEIJING "The US Secretary of Commerce will lead a delegation to China in the upcoming week. The spokesman Gao Feng didn't provide many details, but said he hopes the two countries can work together to follow through on the joint statement. Wang Hui, CGTN, Beijing.
