The best of African contemporary art is on display in South Africa - at the Investec Cape Town Art Fair. There's a growing interest in art around the continent. And the event creates opportunities for emerging African artists to showcase their work to galleries from all around the world. CGTN's Travers Andrews has more.
For many years now the Investec Cape Town Art Fair has become renowned as Africa's leading destination to buy local and international art. It showcases some of the finest examples of African contemporary art in all its forms with vibrancy and diversity that transcends the canvas. It this unique selling point that allows in to attract some of the most in-demand artists from the African continent, many of whom are on display one again.
KHANYA MASHABELA CO-ORGANIZER, INVESTEC CAPE TOWN ART FAIR "We have artists coming from all over the African continent as well as internationally, they are over probably 100 or 200 artists showing at the fair. We have people coming from West Africa, from Europe, from North America, Australia and the Middle East and we have a large representation from all over the globe."
Cape Town's art scene is constantly evolving and that is quite evident at the fair. The ZeitzMOCCA Museum in the Mother City has also provided a home to some of these splendid works of art. But many local artists display here because the South African art scene still needs transformation and become representative of the plurality of voices that have actually created art in the country.
BLESSING NGOBENI ARTIST "Historically an artists work from the township is not shown in bigger spaces so for me, I want to break through that cycle to say no, my work must also be shown in the international platform, international spaces and become part of the dialogue of art."
There are also different expressions of contemporary art that are fair's attention grabbers including powerful works with social and political narratives.

And many of them are looking at East Africa with a particular focus on Kenyan artist's rich and multi-layered works.
KALOKI NYAMAI KENYAN ARTIST "African art is booming everywhere and I can see from the work I'm producing like how people are responding to the work and so with other artists you can see that and globally big galleries are taking in African artists, more and more and it's such a great thing."
