The Tokyo Game Show drew the attention of some 250,000 visitors from September 21-24. Among the traditional cosplay catwalks and creepy androids, the gaming industry showcased its latest titles at the annual show.
Electronic sports took center stage for the first time at the annual event, as the best of the best faced off in games like Street Fighter V.
Electronic sports (e-sports) are multiplayer computer games played in front of spectators. This immersive form of virtual reality can not only lead to new kinds of games but also helps revive interest in old genres.
Atsushi Morita, president of Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan, Sony's game division, said that Japanese culture is at the root of visual story-telling that began with manga comic books, went on to animation and films and now allows for an interactive element in games.
"Gaming is an interactive form of entertainment, and actually we think of it as an advanced form of entertainment. As such, as games become increasingly appealing, they should be recognized as a part of our culture. That is what we are aiming for," says Morita.
