India became a permanent member of the SCO this year. Experts say this is significant in terms of security gains, but also in being part of a world order that will shape the future with powers like China and Russia. CGTN correspondent Shweta Bajaj spoke with Samir Saran from the think tank, the Observer Research Foundation. They talked about India's SCO membership and how that would affect the country and the region. Take a listen.
SHWETA BAJAJ NEW DELHI "What are the big takeaways from India becoming a full member of the SCO is concerned?"
SAMIR SARAN, PRESIDENT OBSERVER RESEARCH FOUNDATION "We are in the age that we need to engage with a flexible geometry of geopolitics rather than very rigid structure, and I think SCO gives India that particular flexibility to be a key voice in an arrangement that will shape much of Eurasia in the days ahead. You Know Russia, China and India are, arguably most important countries that are going to create political security and stability arrangements; of course there is a significant role of US, Japan and a few other countries but at the heart of a Eurasian arrangement which will manage energy, people, security, trade, economics technology; you will find these three countries as important ingredients. I think India has sensed engages with the Western order in conversations around Indo-pacific accord, Infrastructure, trade and finance in Africa and Indian-Ocean region. It needs to be part of this very important group that will have significant impact on rules-based order which might be very different to once we are used to; one that emerged post World War 2."
SHWETA BAJAJ NEW DELHI "Not only India, Pakistan too became full member of SCO this year. Do you think it will improve India Pakistan relation?"
SAMIR SARAN, PRESIDENT OBSERVER RESEARCH FOUNDATION "I have always argued that perhaps, the durable settlement that may emerge between India and Pakistan in the days ahead, might actually be shaped by Beijing. They are the most invested in the region. The Americans and the British had only so much and no more, China is a neighbour to both."
