In 2015, over 1.1 billion people in the world smoked tobacco. With more than 300 million smokers in China, about one in every three cigarettes in the world is consumed in China.
Until recently, Chinese smokers could light up pretty much anywhere, except in some major cities like Beijing and Shanghai. Now, as a nationwide ban on smoking in public places comes into force in months, a culture shift will be needed in the implementation. But a Chinese invention that has taken the world by storm poses a challenge to public smoking bans in China.
