We begin in the United Arab Emirates, Chinese President Xi Jinping has met with the Gulf nation's rulers in Abu Dhabi. They agreed to elevate their relationship to a new level. President Xi was also given the UAE's highest honorary medal. Natasha Hussain has more.
A high-profile welcome ceremony for the first visit by a Chinese president in nearly three decades, featuring horse guards, an aerobatic display and a 21-gun salute.
Inside the lavish Presidential Palace, Xi Jinping walked shoulder to shoulder with the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and met with UAE cabinet ministers and members of the royal family.
During the talks, the leaders agreed to upgrade their bilateral relations to what's known as a comprehensive strategic partnership.
A joint statement said they would step up their cooperation in sectors such as energy, finance, culture and security. Under the new framework, the two sides will deepen high-level exchanges and strengthen communication and coordination on regional and international issues. The UAE firmly sticks to the one-China policy and appreciates China's important role in international affairs.
The two sides will jointly build the Belt and Road, as well as explore opportunities in areas such as e-commerce and AI. They will set up bank branches and deepen cooperation on customs, taxation and IP protection. China is willing to work with the UAE to build an all-round energy cooperation pattern, expand mutual investment, and strengthen cooperation on renewable and nuclear energy, also jointly support scientific research.
The two countries will strengthen security cooperation and fight against all forms of terrorism. Also, they agreed to set up cultural centers, launch joint cultural projects, and participate in cultural activities. They also agreed to expand dialogue on soft power and cultural policies, enhance cooperation in fields such as heritage preservation, modern arts and urban environment, and promote exchanges between think tanks.
This is President Xi's first overseas visit since his re-election in March. The UAE leaders said he has always been a good friend of the country. President Xi was given the UAE's highest honorary medal in Abu Dhabi on Friday, and he's expected to participate in cultural activities before wrapping up the state visit.
