During the Shanghai International Film Festival, CGTN's Ji Xiaojun sat down with celebrated British actor Tom Hiddleston and Amanda Berry, CEO of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. The two guests talked about a training program aimed at developing and supporting new talents coming from China.
TOM HIDDLESTON ACTOR "This is my fourth visit. So twice before to Beijing and once to Shanghai last year. It's lovely to be back. Always have a great time here."
Ji Xiaojun: "What's the mission this time?"
TOM HIDDLESTON ACTOR "Well, we are with BAFTA, um, and we are launching a new initiative called 'Breakthrough China', which is a scheme to develop, seek out, encourage, and support new talent coming from China in films, games and television. Um, and it's very exciting. We've done it in Britain, in the UK, we have a scheme called the 'Breakthrough Brits'. Um, and it's a... we try and find individuals who are already in the creative industries, already making things. And this is about supporting them and strengthening them and connecting them with the industry."
AMANDA BERRY BAFTA CEO "This is such an exciting time for BAFTA to be here in Shanghai. In 2015, I was here. The last time I was here was with Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge. And with the Duke, we presented a replica BATFA mask from 'Raise the Red Lantern', which won a BAFTA, to the Shanghai Film Museum. And at that time, that presentation was about recognizing the rich culture of Chinese film. But we also made a very public promise that we wanted to work more closely with the creative industries in China."
Ji Xiaojun: "So it's called BAFTA Breakthrough China?"
TOM HIDDLESTON ACTOR "That's right."
Ji Xiaojun: "It's almost a new version of China's Got Talent for Britain."
TOM HIDDLESTON ACTOR "Yeah, in one way."
AMANDA BERRY BAFTA CEO "Yes. In a good way. Yes."
Ji Xiaojun: "So what kind of talent you're looking for basically?"
AMANDA BERRY BAFTA CEO "So we're looking for writers, directors, game developers, actors. We're starting quite small in terms of the categories of production we're looking at. We're looking to find five people working across film, games and television and these are people who are at the start of their career and their colleagues are saying these are the rising stars, these are the people we need to be watching. Um, we've chosen just to go with five in the first year because we want to make sure that we are properly supporting them, understanding what support and connections and networking they need to help them grow and develop in their career. And then in future years, we'll start to build the number of people that we identify and picked to be members of BAFTA Breakthrough China."
TOM HIDDLESTON ACTOR "I do think there is a there's an amazing, I've seen it myself with BAFTA in the UK. At the beginning of a career, ah, it's, you can have a good instinct about your creativity. And you could be going in the right direction, but you're not quite sure if it's true. And then if an organization like BAFTA says, uh, you're doing absolutely the right thing, keep going and allow us to introduce you to experts in their field, to directors, to writers, to producers who can help mentor these new Breakthrough award winners, to help them develop their own skills, their own tools, sharpen their instinct and, um, and go on to become the next generation of filmmakers, games designers, producers. And 'Breakthrough Brits' has already proven over and over again that they're very, very acute in picking the right people. Um, Tom Holland was a Breakthrough Brit. Um, uh, your 'Neighborhood Spiderman', the new TH, as I like to call it, and Letitia Wright, who was in 'Avengers' and 'Black Panther'. And Dan Gray, who's made this extraordinary game called 'Monument Valley', and they've gone on to success after success. And I think with renewed confidence in their own skills. Uh, so I think it has a that's what we're hoping to replicate in China."
Ji Xiaojun: "Since you have so much love by your Chinese fans, do you have anything to say to your Chinese fans here?"
TOM HIDDLESTON ACTOR "Thank you, all of you. Thank you so much for having me and thanks for following my career and I'll see you soon."
Ji Xiaojun: "And do you like your, the name given to you by your Chinese fans?"
TOM HIDDLESTON ACTOR "I do, yes, very much. Dou Sen."
Ji Xiaojun: "Dou Sen. Say it again. Say I am to your fans."
TOM HIDDLESTON ACTOR "I am Dou Sen."
