China-US Trade Tensions: International criticism of protectionism grows

Panamanian President Juan Carlos Varela and Brazilian Foreign Minister Aloysio Nunes have spoken against trade protectionism.
JUAN CARLOS VARELA PANAMANIAN PRESIDENT "A more globalized world, not only economically but also culturally, is a more prosperous world for all. In addition, fully opening the borders and letting everyone share the world's fortune will lead to a more peaceful world. We need to put more time into construction, instead of weakening any particular side."
ALOYSIO NUNES BRAZILIAN FOREIGN MINISTER "We believe protectionism might bring short-term benefits, but those benefits are an illusion because protectionism suppresses competition and technological progress which are the most important elements of development."
Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg also criticized Washington's increasing protectionist measures, warning they could lead to recession and war. She said the US appeared to be "the biggest threat" to free trade while China was acting like one of the "foremost defenders".
