Norway has successfully hosted two Winter Olympic Games and so it has extensive experience in building world-class infrastructure and promoting the culture of winter sports.
The 1952 Winter Olympics was held at the Holmenkollen Ski Arena in Oslo, where other World Cup events also take place annually. Holmenkollen’s ski jumping has been regarded as the heart of Norwegian skiing for over 100 years.
The ski jumps and arena were completely rebuilt for the 2011 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships. And now, the arena is one of the country’s most visited tourist attractions. It includes a ski museum, a ski simulator, a café and a jump tower – where people are able to enjoy the panoramic views of Oslo and the surrounding forests from the top.
Hafjell Ski Resort has a special place in the hearts of many sports fans, thanks to the Winter Olympics in 1994 – one of the largest sporting events in modern Norwegian history. The family-friendly Hafjell mountain area is internationally known for offering a variety skiing and snowboarding options. Striving to satisfy everybody, Hafjell has also opened specially-designed skiing areas only for children.
For Norwegians, skiing is a popular winter sport that is deeply rooted in traditions and rituals. The president of the Norwegian National Olympic Committee, Tom Tvedt, said: "There's a saying that Norwegians know how to ski from birth. It is very important that kids feel joyous in the snow, which is also why Norway plays a significant role in winter sports."
