We begin in Japan, where this year's G20 summit is underway. Chinese President Xi Jinping is calling for an international effort to build a fair, just and non-discriminatory market environment on the first day of the Osaka gathering. CGTN's Zheng Yibing has more.
At a meeting held against a complex and increasingly severe geopolitical backdrop. Chinese President Xi Jinping is calling for G20 members to work together.
XI JINPING CHINESE PRESIDENT "We need to encourage the movement of information, technology and human resources to safeguard the global industrial chain, sharing our strength and cooperating to achieve a win-win situation. We should not develop behind a closed door, and we cannot interfere in the market."
He's calling on global economies to push forward reform & innovation, improve global governance, address development issues, and resolve disputes in the spirit of partnership. This was also in line with his comments in an informal meeting with BRICS countries earlier in the day. There, he criticized the regression in the international community but held back from pointing fingers or naming names.
XI JINPING CHINESE PRESIDENT "One of the most prominent risks is that some of the developed countries have frequently taken protectionist and unilateral measures, intentionally provoking trade frictions and technological blockades, undermining the international trade order and the global industrial chain. These moves harm the common interests of all nations. They also cast a shadow on the peaceful and stable development of the world."
His comment was echoed by world leaders, including the G20 summit host. On Friday, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe called for a strong G20 message on "free, fair and indiscriminate" trade as he expressed "deep concerns" over the current global trade landscape.
SHINZO ABE JAPANESE PRIME MINISTER "Reciprocal trade restrictions don't benefit any country. Any trade steps should be in line with WTO rules. I am deeply concerned about the current situation surrounding global trade."
Xi also met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, and leaders from Africa and elsewhere.
ZHENG YIBING OSAKA, JAPAN "The Chinese president also said China would take measures to further open up its market, expand imports, improve its business environment, ensure fair treatment for foreign enterprises, and press ahead with multilateral trade agreement negotiations.
