'Toruk - The First Flight' made its debut in Montreal on November 12th, 2015 before moving on to other cities around the world. The show depicts a world before the events featured in James Cameron's 2009 film 'Avatar'. The official teaser trailer is delivered in the Na'vi language of the Avatar series. It can be translated as: "I am the last living member of the A'nurai clan. When I connect with Eywa, I hear the voices of our distant ancestors; I hear the time when their lives were threatened. This is that story." And let's find out more.
Brought to life as a life-sized puppet, Toruk is the central character of the show.
The word 'Toruk', in the Na'vi language, refers to the great leon-opt-eryx, or dragonlike creature, that rules over the Pandorian sky. Fundamental to Na'vi lore and culture, this perplexing creature is critical to the clan's sense of destiny and interconnectedness with members past and present.
Toruk has five special acrobatic acts and general tumbling skills that help capture the other worldly skills of the inhabitants of Pandora.
Each tribe has its own unique apparatus and discipline, reflecting its tribal values and skills which are necessary to tame Toruk.
Actually, Toruk has landed in Sanya, on China's Hainan island province, for a three-month stint from February.
Even before heading east, some Cirque members have been studying the Chinese language.
The group's organisers think it's important to help them learn about the country's customs.
JANIE MALLET PUBLICIST, TORUK – CIRQUE DU SOLEIL  "There's not only the key words and the key sentences. So, you also have a little bit of learning of what's the cultural side of it, what are, for example the good and lucky numbers? Or, what do you do with your chopsticks, or what don't you do with your chopsticks when you're at the restaurant? So, just trying to navigate the cultural ways where we're going to go."
The group hopes its investment in the language will help the team better connect with visitors when Toruk and its colourful spectacle hits the Chinese mainland.
