Ahead of the foreign ministers meeting, the Arab League's permanent representatives have held an extraordinary session in Cairo over the Palestinian crisis. CGTN's Yasser Hakim is in the Egyptian capital, and filed this report.
The tension was clear in the air. As the session was announced a closed meeting. After hours of deliberations the Arab League spokesman issued a statement to the media.
HOSAM ZAKI ARAB LEAGUE SPOKESPERSON "We are formulating a plan of action against the decision taken by the USA and any other country that takes the same steps of moving their embassy to Jerusalem."
Details of that plan of action against have not been released. But some say it relates to a previous resolution taken by the Arab organisation.
MOURAD ABDALLAH JOURNALIST, AL AHRAM "A law issued in the Arab Summit of 1980 in Amman calls for severing relations with any country that moves it's embassy to Jerusalem. It was not applied before but with the current situation it can mean lowering diplomatic representation or cutting economic ties with these countries."
The Arab League has taken further steps. It referred Israel to the international Criminal Court to investigate acts of crimes against humanity by Israel towards the Palestinians demonstrators. Israel had killed over sixty Palestinians, including women and children, who were voicing their rejection to the inauguration of a US embassy in Jerusalem on Monday. In spite of their many differences, Arab countries have shown a united front over Palestine.
USAMA EL NOQALY SAUDI ARABIAN REPRESENTATIVE, ARAB LEAGUE "There is a consensus on a draft resolution against Israel that will be submitted to the foreign ministers in an extraordinary meeting. This consensus over the draft law means a unity by all Arabs concerning the Palestinian cause and Jerusalem."
Foreign ministers of all member states are to convene for an extraordinary session in Cairo on Thursday. They're expected to ratify the Arab action plan and announce it to the world.
