Up until last night, nearly all highly-sought after lots had been sold off at the Guardian spring auction. The top lot came from a landscape painting, with late painter Li Keran's landscape scroll fetching more than 100 million yuan.
On Monday night, late contemporary ink master Li Keran's hanging scroll "Thousands of Mountains" sold for 126 million yuan - which is nearly 20 million US dollars, becoming the top lot of THIS Guardian spring auction.
Qi Baishi's ink and color painting "Offering" sold for over 40 million yuan. And Xu Beihong's "Three Horses in the Autumn Woods" sold for 34.5 million yuan.
In the ancient Chinese painting and calligraphy category, Qing dynasty painter Qian Weicheng's album "Flora" which is composed of 12 paintings of flowers, was auctioned off for nearly 67 million yuan - 37 times the value of its estimated price.
In the Chinese oil painting category, 12 pieces were sold surpassing the benchmark of 10 million yuan. The top lot in the category, Zhou Chunya's "Chinese Stone" sold for 43.7 million. It is followed by Zhang Xiaogang's "Big Family No. 1", which sold for 40.25 million, and Jin Shangyi's "Monk Painter Kun Can", which went for 28.75 million.
The highly anticipated oil canvas by Xu Beihong, received a final bidding price of 189 million yuan, one million short of its baseline price of 190 million. So regretfully, it wasn't sold.
Also worth mentioning, an imperial vase from the Qianlong period sold for 50.6 million, and a rare painted enamel bowl sold for nearly 9 million.
