A giant statue of Guan Yu was lit up for the first time on Tuesday in Yuncheng, north China’s Shanxi Province. The statue, which stands 61 meters tall atop a 19-meter-tall pedestal, represents the ancient Chinese warrior who died at the age of 61 and lived in his hometown for 19 years. Twenty bright lights were put to use to make the statue look more striking. Guan Yu was one of the best known Chinese historical figures throughout East Asia during the Three Kingdoms period, when he played a significant role in the civil war that led to the collapse of the Han Dynasty. Although no descriptions of his physical appearance can be found among historical records, he is traditionally portrayed as a robust man with a long beard.
