The 19th Beijing Hope Run will take place at 9 a.m. on September 16 in Beijing's Chaoyang Park. The route's length will cover approximately 5 km.
The run is primarily organized by the Cancer Institute and Hospital (CIH) at the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences in partnership with the China Cancer Foundation. The Canadian Embassy in Beijing is among the contributors in the coordination efforts. Six other places across China including Shanghai, Chongqing, Hunan, Hebei, Liaoning and Yunnan will also host their own Hope Run, to show solidarity in the fight against cancer.

According to He Jie, President of the CIH, more than 300,000 people have participated in the run since 1999, and over 30 million yuan (4.4 million US dollars) has been raised for cancer research and treatment in China through the annual event.
So far, the donation has supported over 750 projects nationwide, concerning cancer prevention, screening, diagnosis and treatment. In 2016 alone, for instance, a total of 35 clinical projects in Beijing and 13 projects in Chongqing, Hebei and Hunan have obtained sponsorships.
The Beijing Hope Run was inspired in part by the Terry Fox Run, which was the largest single day cancer fundraiser in the world. The run is held in memory of Terry Fox, a Canadian bone cancer patient who ran 5,373 km across Canada in 143 days whilst battling the illness in order to raise funds for cancer research in 1980, according to Cindy Termorshuizen, Deputy Head of Mission at the Canadian Embassy in Beijing.
“The Canadian Embassy in Beijing is honored to participate this event from the very beginning,” said Termorshuizen. “The Beijing Hope Run is a joint effort between Canada and China in healthcare sector.”
