The Colombian government and the rebel group National Liberation Army (ELN) agreed a ceasefire Monday ahead of Pope Francis' visit this week. The agreement is seen as a significant step towards negotiating a permanent peace deal. The deal struck in Quito, Ecuador, where talks with the ELN have been held since February, goes into effect October 1. It runs through January 12 next year and can be renewed if both sides agree.
