South Africa has also been struggling with a sky-high crime rate and the worst HIV epidemic in the world. UNAIDS figures suggest the country had over 7 million people living with HIV in 2016, or 19 percent of the global HIV population. South Africa also saw around 270-thousand new HIV infections and 110-thousand HIV/AIDS-related deaths that year. Security is another concern for the country. According to independent research group Numbeo, South Africa's crime index is 75 out of 100, while its safety index is under 25. The research group also lists corruption and bribery in South Africa as very high.
