One of South Africa's most well-known illustrators, the internationally acclaimed artist William Kentridge, is showcasing his work in Johannesburg. The exhibition also brings together a range of other exceptional print-projects. CGTN's Yolisa Njamela has more.
YOLISA NJAMELA JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA "William Kentridge is one of South Africa's most well-known experts. He is best known for his prints, drawings, and animated films."
The internationally acclaimed artist was at the Artist Proof Studio in Johannesburg to hold a public conversation with founder Kim Berman on the creative process.
KIM BERMAN, CO-FOUNDER ARTIST PROOF STUDIO "So this exhibition is called a journey of co-creation and it's 28 years of exploring printmaking as a democratic medium. In that space we have a history of the work we've done. Portfolios of work by artists from 25 years ago. The first collaboration we did was with William Kentridge twenty years ago. So, this kind of tells a story and history of careers that have come far."
The Artist Proof Studio is rooted in community and co-creation. The philosophy behind the concept has shown after 28 years that art can be about change and sustainable impact.
KIM BERMAN, CO-FOUNDER ARTIST PROOF STUDIO "We see printmaking as a way that young artists can make a living, and many of our graduates are self-supporting and have gone on to have very good careers."
Berman also sees printmaking as a metaphor for democracy. A place of learning and sharing. She shares this with Kentridge. Kentridge has always championed co-creation in the art industry.
In their conversation, Berman and Kent explore the multiple ways in which co-creation is integral to the printmaking processes. This includes how it contributes to a conception of art invigorated by the possibilities of exchange of ideas and engagement.
WILLIAM KENTRIDGE ARTIST "The art proof studio is a very good model of footprint studio cause it's both professional studio for producing the prints of artists, experiencing the artists but it's also a training institution for both artists and people who don't want to be artists but professional printmakers. And both of these are vital."
Kentridge is known throughout the world for his remarkable and generous collaborations. His approach to inclusion creates opportunities for many emerging and established artists to share in a platform and participate in his creative process. Yolisa Njamela, CGTN, Johannesburg, South Africa.
