A big deal in online-offline integration. E-commerce giant Alibaba said Monday that it and its affiliate Ant Financial bought out the remaining 43 percent of Chinese food delivery company Ele.me for 9-point-5 billion US dollars.
This deal would give Alibaba a vast logistics network that helps it get a leg up in local services. Alibaba said the company would install the chief executive and founder of Ele.me -- Zhang Xuhao -- as chairman and special adviser on new retail strategies. Zhang said that Ele.me need an experienced CEO to help the platform improve its local service system. As a result, Alibaba named company vice president Wang Lei chief executive at Ele.me. The Ele.me deal adds to the Alibaba-Tencent rivalry in services as Tencent has invested in Ele.me's competitor Meituan Dianping.
