Aside from deepening partnership with ASEAN, China's also been looking at Africa. Egypt's state-owned manufacturing company will start assembling the country's first electric van, powered by Chinese technology. Here's Adel EL Mahrouky with more.
Following the government's recent decisions to facilitate electric cars imports and manufacturing Egyptian investors are rushing to get a share of that booming market. China has so far been the most popular partner in that rising industry, here. The DongFeng's M5 is the newest production of that partnership, an eight passengers vehicle that will be assembled in Egypt.
HASSAN EL DESOUKY CHAIRMAN, DRSHL "My aim is not to simply assemble. I target to create supporting industries to car manufacturing in Egypt, we have factories and manufacturers in Egypt but the production scale is microscopic compared to our market needs. The Chinese producers are convinced that Egypt is the future hub for electric vehicles manufacturing and from there we can penetrate the Gulf."
DongFeng and Drshl have agreed with the state-owned Egyptian Automotive Manufacturing company to assemble this vehicle in Egypt. It has a top speed limited to 120KM/h, and a travel range that can reach up to 350KM. A full charge can take 30mins in charging stations and up to 12 hours at home.
MOHAMED EL LEITHY MARKETING DIRECTOR, DRSHL "We know we'll need time to gain the customer confidence in electric car, after all it's still a relatively new invention all over the world. We took a risk by bringing this car here. But we know that Egyptians will be interested to try it. It's why we have unlimited test drives for anyone. Meanwhile, we'll be moving to spread charges all over the country. That will boost our customers' confidence."
HASSAN EL DESOUKY CHAIRMAN, DRSHL "I didn't want to begin with a sedan car that has a precise customer, this is a van, it can be used for a family car for commercial use, that will give it a wider spread at its uses are diverse. That way people will be acquainted with the concept that an electric car can carry eight people, so when I introduce the sedan, it'll succeed more."
The production line will begin with 200 cars expected by the end of the year. Within the coming five years this partnership is planning to increase the production to 10 thousand electric cars annually and at least manufacture 70% of the car components domestically. The ambitious plan also includes a chargers factory and to establish 1000 charging stations across Egypt, in a collaboration with the Armed Forces Gas Station company Wataniya. The Value of the agreement was not disclosed.
ADEL EL MAHROUKY CAIRO, EGYPT "The charging stations alone will provide 3000 jobs in the next few years. With the planned 70% domestic component target, Egypt hopes to revive national spare parts production to open new industrial and trade horizons for the Egyptian automotive industry. AMA CGTN CA."
