Chinese President Xi Jinping has made immense contributions to the Chinese people and the world at large, said William Jones from the Executive Intelligence Review.
Jones, the Washington Bureau Chief of the weekly newsmagazine, made the remarks during an exclusive interview with CGTN on Wednesday, a day after the session of the National People's Congress came to an end.
He underscored that Xi has been serving the people whole-heartedly.
"The important thing of course was that he mentioned the notion of the Chinese people well over a couple dozen times. It was characterized, in one sense, by a sense of humility as well as a sense of pride. Humility was in accepting the decision of the Chinese people to be president for another term. He said that I work for the interest for the Chinese people; their interest is what I am looking for; this is what I have to serve.”
“I think it was also an attempt to send the same message to all other people in the audience as well as governing officials: that this has to be the criteria," he added.
William Jones has studied China's policies and Sino-US relations for the past decade. During the interview, he also delved into Xi Jinping's remarks on foreign policy. President Xi said any action attempting to separate the country will definitely fail, and will be condemned by the people and punished by history. According to Jones, the president was sending an important message to the entire world.
"I think that was a direct message to the rest of the world. It was also perhaps a reply to some of the things that are being done in Washington now with regard to Taiwan, that he was replying to that we are not going to allow any part of our territory to be separated from China. And what these powers are doing when they make this critique is a form of what I might call self-imaging, that they are reflecting their own ideas on another country," said Jones, noting that in the case of China and many other countries, this notion is a "false impression of where the world is going."
The expert also touched upon Xi’s emphasis on the “community of shared interest” in the world. “He wants a different model of relations between countries, and this is what China is working for."
