Polish prosecutors say they have cracked a scam that local media say swindled 1.8 million euros (about 2.2 million US dollars) out of Chinese working in Poland during the past year.
Fifty suspects – 48 Taiwanese and two Poles – had been arrested up to Thursday. If convicted, they face up to 15 years in prison.
Polish police and counterterrorism officers say they found a machine gun, a shotgun and 100,000 Polish zloty (about 29,382 US dollars) in cash when they conducted a search at the alleged ringleader’s home.
In the past few years, hundreds of Taiwan telecom fraud groups have been busted and their members arrested abroad, including countries as Kenya, Egypt, Turkey, South Korea and some Southeast Asian countries.
