Libya Conflict: Ongoing instability threatens oil industry

As fighting continues in Libya, the ongoing instability is threatening the North African nation's oil industry. On Sunday, Libyan National Army commander Khalifa Haftar announced several attacks on oil-rich sites in the country's north-east. The Oil Corporation has urged all parties not to exploit the oil sector in their political rivalry.
Fighting over Ras Lanuf and the neighbouring oil port of Es Sider began last week. This is after Ibrahim Jathran's armed forces -- opposed to Khalifa Haftar's Libyan National Army -- stormed the terminals. Jathran had controlled the ports before losing them to the LNA two years ago. Haftar already controls most of eastern Libya, and his forces say they're close to freeing the coastal city of Derna from rebel fighters.
SALEH FARAJ, OFFICER, LIBYAN NATIONAL ARMY "There is nothing left here in Derna, only 50 or 60 people still fighting the army. The last few rebel forces are holed up in their stronghold in the central part of the city because there are buildings that protect them from armoured vehicles, and snipers."
It's feared the fighting in Derna will undermine UN-led efforts to stabilise Libya, by reconciling Haftar with his rivals in the country's west. The United Nations is planning to help Libya hold elections in December, with a view to unifying the war-torn country. CM, CGTN.
