The Middle Eastern nation of Qatar will host the 2021 International Horticultural Expo and the World Cup the following year. But this year, Beijing is offering a glimpse into what the small Gulf country has planned. Spanning over 2-thousand square meters, the Qatar National Pavilion has one of the largest, widest and tallest areas at the Expo. CGTN's Wei Lynn Tang takes us on a little tour inside.
WEI LYNN TANG BEIJING "It's hard NOT to notice this marvel of a building at the International Horticultural Expo. Say hello to the Qatar National Pavilion."
From a construction standpoint, if you can see it - five trees are supporting five gardens in a circular pavilion. Each garden on each floor tells a different story about Qatar.
The building's design is inspired by none other than the Sidra tree, the icon of Qatar's heritage that fills its people with pride.
The Sidra is a symbol of life to Qataris. It is able to thrive under the dry hot weather in the nation's deserts, the epitome of resilience.
DR. FAYQA ASHKANANI DEPUTY GENERAL COMMISSIONER, QATAR PAVILION "This building really reflects the nature of Qatar, horticulture and history and traditional life in Qatar."
WEI LYNN TANG BEIJING "There's a lot to expect from Qatar in the future. In two years, it will host this very same expo, and in 2022, the FIFA World Cup. And right here on the third floor at the future tree garden, you'll get to see the layout of the 8 stadiums."
Out of the 8 ballparks, one of them - the Khalifa International Stadium is complete.
And this is what the Qataris call a "Majlis" - a living room in homes where families gather and talk about life, and where men discuss business.
WEI LYNN TANG BEIJING "And how better to know a country than through its markets. This is probably one of my favourite spots in the Qatar National Pavilion. The Souq Waqif is a famous tourist destination in Doha, Qatar's capital city."
Over here you get to experience the buzz of a traditional local market from fashion to spices.
And ladies, you can even try out the traditional women's wear for free.
And finally, walk up to the highest floor - and behold.
WEI LYNN TANG BEIJING "It feels surreal to be standing here - soaking in the view of other gardens and pavilions. You can choose to also absorb the beauty of mini gardens on your way out - down the spiralling stairs. Well goodbye, or as they say in Arabic, ma'al-salamah, for now. I'm WLT from the Qatar National Pavilion at the International Horticultural Expo in Beijing."
